Rowan MacLeod
Senior Academic Tutor | Higher Education & Humanities Specialist
Waverley Institute of Higher Education
Dear Hiring Committee,
I am writing to apply for the Academic Tutor post at Waverley Institute of Higher Education. With an established background in undergraduate humanities tutoring, seminar facilitation, and academic writing pedagogy, I welcome the opportunity to support your students in developing critical analytical skills and scholarly confidence.
In my current capacity as Lead Academic Tutor with Lothian Academic Learning Trust, I facilitate weekly seminars and small-group tutorials for up to 60 undergraduate humanities students per semester, centring on critical reading and thesis formulation. Alongside targeted workshops in research structuring and academic literacy, I provide individualised dissertation guidance and formative essay feedback to help learners strengthen their arguments and evidence. I also support probationary colleagues through mentorship in seminar management and constructive assessment techniques.
My experience also includes designing tailored learning frameworks to ease complex academic milestones. Through the Honours Transition Writing Initiative, I devised a modular academic writing framework adopted across tutorial groups to assist second-year undergraduates transitioning to honours-level research essays. Supplementing this with reading guides and formative peer-review exercises enabled students to build genuine independence in source evaluation. I look forward to bringing this commitment to constructive, rigorous tutorial teaching to the undergraduate community at Waverley Institute.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my tutorial and mentoring background aligns with the needs of your teaching team.
Yours sincerely,
Rowan MacLeod
